My Music magazine’s title like most magazines has something to do with what the magazine is about. The title of my Magazine is “SOLO” because it mainly concentrates on solo artists. “rolling stones” however, was the name of a famous rock group so the magazine may be trying to tell the readers that the music magazine is ‘legendary’ or ‘well known and successful’. Another meaning that my music magazines’ title may mean is that it one of a kind due to it being “solo” and that no magazine is like it. However it does not reflect its genre but hardly any music magazine has a title that lets the readers know what genre the magazine is about, the usually let the reader know by the layout. The main person who was meant to be Jessie J wore a simple white top with a black cardigan on top because all the pictured were going to be black and white in the magazine so wearing white and black would look much more bold and because the contrast each other they would stand out more. Also in Jessie J’s new music video “who you are” she is wearing a plain top so for this magazine we've gone for the simple but bold costumes. The reason why I have done this is because I wanted the magazine to portray a simply but very bold and powerful image to the audience.
The font of the title “Orator Std” which in size 48 pt. has the same width of the magazine. It also looks very professional and isn’t to bold or thin, it also stands out and is very eye catchy. Also the colour of the title is red which is a very bright and bold colour. It stands out even more because the key image is black and white which contrasts with the red. I have written an article about Jessie J for the double page spread, it is written in the form of a typical magazine article so it has a heading , sub-heading and is in columns. It also is written in the way magazine articles are written with quotes from the artist and has the background story of the artist. By having the layout of a ‘typical’ music magazine article it lets the readers recognise that it’s a music magazine article.
My magazine’s layout unlike Kerrang does not suggest my music genre which is pop/soul. The music genre is a very hard one to represent but by having key images of pop/soul artists on the front cover, the readers may know what the genre of the magazine is. Also because the cover lines are written in a formal way it tells the readers that it is targeted at a more older/ sophisticated audience which is also soul music’s target audience. The layout of the magazine is very neat and clear. This gives the magazine a professional look which is appreciated by readers from 16 and over. It also may suggest the magazine’s music genre which is soul/pop this is because most pop or soul magazine have a neat layout like mine unlike rock magazines or magazines aimed at a younger audience.
My contents page has quite a few images in the side and a bigger image of the artist the magazine is focusing on in the centre. Most music magazine have images in the contents page with the page number underneath in a smaller font which I have done so too. I also have the magazine’s contact details in the contents page as well as used different font and colours to make it more attractive and appealing. This is what nearly all music magazines do and it’s known as a Music Magazine convention because people are used to music magazines having images, contact details and various fonts in the contents page. I also have added a way in which you can subscribe to the magazine in the contents page which again is something all magazines like to do.
All the images including the key image are black and white. This is not a music convention so it makes my music magazine very unique and different. Most music magazines has the person in the key image make eye contact with the camera so it looks like they're looking at the audience but in my key image she is looking downwards. This again challenges music magazine conventions and makes my music magazine look very unique and it will make it stand out from other magazines.
Representation
The reason why I took this shot of Jessie J’s as inspiration is because it she looks very confident and powerful for her posture and facial expression. I wanted to represent Jessie J as a very self-confident and powerful solo artist which is why this shot of her was ideal for the magazine. However I wanted the audience to not feel intimidated by the image but feel like see she is very similar to them which is why her clothing Is very plain and she has no jewellery on. This tells the audience that Jessie J has become famous and powerful due to her talent and efforts and not because of her looks and money. This may attract the audience because unlike other magazines, the model in my magazine looks very simple and not Photo shopped to look very thin and is wearing clothes that my target audience wear. So my target audience will feel like they have similarities and this may help boost my sales because teenagers want to stop buying magazine which makes them feel very intimidated and instead buy magazine who have artist that that they can relate to.
Throughout the magazine the images of the artist look very simple (in clothing), are all black and white (due to the house style) but they have facial expressions and poses like this one which makes them look very confident and determined. This makes the audience think that the magazine has included solo artist that are very “modest” and “normal looking” yet very powerful and determined. Instead of being intimidated they will feel like they have similarities with the artist and will feel very comfortable looking at the images without feel bad about their own clothes, weight or appearances. I believe that this will help boost my magazine’s sales because my target audience will purchase my magazine because they’ll feel like they can relate to the artist and have similarities, also because the postures makes the artist look very powerful and important and this may attract the audience too.
